Charlotte Dean
An End-of-Life Companion and grief listener rooted in South Devon. I support people who are approaching end-of-life, and those around them, with warm, steady presence, careful listening and practical compassion. I walk alongside people before, during and after death with down-to-earth attentiveness and care.
“You helped in gentle, careful ways: non-judgemental, loving and a steadfast rock amidst the storm and turmoil. I trusted you implicitly and felt more confident when you were around, supporting in whatever way was needed.” JM, 2025
I am very much guided by each person and their family as to what’s needed – this might be help with end-of-life planning, practical advice and signposting, compassionate listening, support and respite for loved ones, techniques to support relaxation, vigiling in the final stages and ongoing advice and support after death. I work comfortably alongside hospice and clinical care teams, providing continuity and complimentary (non-medical) support.
I offer a free, initial ‘getting to know you’ session where we can meet and discuss what you need, and you can see if you feel comfortable about us working together. I am used to communicating clearly and adapting to changing needs; no two end-of-life journeys are the same and it can be a very complex time for everyone.
“Your willingness and ability to easily adapt to whatever circumstances and moods you walked into – which was always completely unpredictable – never felt contrived; only the natural way you are as a real person. Like a friend coming in, rather than someone I’d employed.” Client, 2025
More about me
I followed a deep inner calling to this work in 2021. Since then I’ve trained with the Soul Midwives’ School, Rowcroft Hospice, Sacred Circle CIC, The Sacred Deathcare Centre and independent practitioners. I have volunteered with Rowcroft Hospice since 2022, in both the Inpatient Unit and Bereavement and Listening Support Service. My hospice work includes ongoing supervision and training.
I bring two decades of ceremonial and community work to my grounded and inclusive way of working with life transitions. I’m a member of Totnes Death Cafe Collective and have collaborated on Totnes Dying Matters Awareness Week and community grief tending events. I am trained in simple consensual touch and energy therapies.
My degrees in Social and Visual Anthropology included work exploring memory, oral history and cross-cultural death rituals. Training in family constellations, intuitive coaching and ancestral healing have also informed my sensitivity to culture, belief, family systems and the many ways people make meaning at the end of life. My work is nonetheless always guided by the needs and beliefs of each individual and family I am supporting.
Outside of end-of-life work, I am a senior evaluation and fundraising consultant in the third sector, a writer and a founding member of the Half Moon Community land project in Devon. I’m nourished by harmony singing, dance, collage and textiles, and walking in wild places with my dog. I live close to the River Dart and draw inspiration from the rhythms of land, water and season.
